Ram Sita Temple, Serampore

Serampore, a subdivisional town of Hooghly district houses a number of temples of which the west-facing dalan-shaped Ram Sita Temple deserves mention. Located in Ram Sita Lane roughly about two kilometres from Serampore railway station, the place can be reached both by road and rail.

A couple of minutes walk through Ram Sita Lane will land you to this temple. Once you enter through the gate, you will see a dalan-shaped temple. One will feel complete silence amidst the trees. The temple is on a slightly raised platform with a flight of stairs in the middle.

Ramchandra, Laksman, Sita and others inside the temple sanctum.

I spotted this marble plaque which describes the history of the temple briefly. Raja Rajchandra Roy son of Raja Manohar Roy founder of Sheoraphuli Raj family built this temple on 7th Jaistha, 1160 Bangabda, which corresponds to May, 1753 as per English calendar. According to marble plaque it was also mentioned that Serampore derived its name by linking the three villages of Sripur, Gopinathpur and Mohanpur. In this context it is necessary to mention that this temple was founded before the Danish rule in Serampore or Fredericksnagore. Inside the temple sanctum there is a wooden throne or singhasan. Ramchandra, Lakshman and Sita are placed on the throne. The idols are all made of astodhatu and are worshipped on a daily basis. The main festival here is Ram Nabami when special puja is held.

I would like to thank Shri Asis Ghosh and Shri Souradip Ghosh Varman.
