Durga Puja of Surul Sarkarbari

Durga Puja is celebrated in a grand way in many zamindar houses of West Bengal. I have been travelling to such bonedi houses for the last few years. This year on Nabami I had been to Surul Sarkarbari or Surul Rajbari which is roughly 5 kilometres from Bolpur railway station in Birbhum. Here Maa Durga is worshipped in two houses – baro taraf and choto taraf with much splendour.

Daily worshipped Durga idols of Kolkata Part 3

Durga Puja, the greatest festival of the Bengalees is not only celebrated as barowari pujas but it is equally worshipped in many bonedi households of Kolkata. But there are a few houses and temples in Kolkata where Maa Durga is worshipped round the year. In this post I shall include five such pujas though there are a few more houses or temples where Goddess Durga is worshipped daily, which I could not include in my post due to shortage of time.

Avaya Durga, Silbari, Rajbalhat

Rajbalhat, a town in Jangipara block of Serampore subdivision of Hooghly district is named after Devi Rajballavi. It is also famous for handloom (tant) industry along with Dhaniakhali, also in Hooghly. That apart the town has a number of temples – Sridhar Damodar Temple, Radhakanta Temple along with the temple of Rajballavi.

Krishnarai Jiu Temple,Kanchanpally,Rathtala Nadia

Kanchanpally Rathtala, in Kalyani subdivision of Nadia district in West Bengal which is roughly at a distance of about three kilometres from Kanchrapara railway station houses a big south-facing aatchala temple built in 1708 Sakabda (ie, 1786 A.D) housing the idols of Krishnarai.

Temples of Arambagh, Hooghly

Arambagh, a subdivisional town located about 80 kilometres from Kolkata can be reached both by road and rail. The best way is to take the morning Howrah-Goghat local and get down at Arambagh station at about 9:30 am. A little away from the station is a place called Parul within the Arambagh municipality which can be reached either by a toto or an auto. This place has two aatchala temples with terracotta decorations – Raghunandan Temple and Bishalakshi Temple.

Durga Puja in Dhanyakuria

Durga Puja, a four-day festival is celebrated in different parts of West Bengal and even outside. The pujas which are celebrated in traditional Bengali households and jamidarbari have some unique features from idol to puja rituals.

During the festive days all the members of the family who live outside try to come to their ancestral house where Maa Durga is being worshipped. Dhanyakuria in North 24 Parganas district houses the mansions of Gayen, Ballav and Sahoo who celebrate the puja in a grand way.
